Here, There, Everywhere: Cloud Storage

A kind of networked enterprise storage where data is kept in virtualized storage pools which are usually hosted by third parties is called cloud storage. People who need online storage room buy or lease a certain amount of space from a hosting company. Then data operators create storage pools which depend on the amount of resources that are being virtualized.

Cloud storages are later accessed through a web service application programming interface (API) or by applications that utilize the API, such as a cloud storage gateway, a cloud desktop storage or other Web-based content management systems.

Four types of cloud storage

Public cloud storage is a type of online storage where there is a distinct separation from the storage service provider and the enterprise, with no cloud resources being stored in the enterprise’s data center. The provider is in chare of managing all the public storage of the enterprise.

Personal cloud storage or mobile cloud storage is a subdivision of public cloud storage that is more centered on an individual. An individual’s data is stored in a cloud and that person is able to access it from anywhere in the world. It also allows the possibility of sharing and synchronizing date over several devices.

Private Cloud Storage is a form of cloud storage where the cloud storage provider and enterprise are integrated in the enterprise’s data center. That means that the storage provider creates a resource infrastructure inside the enterprise’s data center that is typically managed by the storage provider. This is an excellent solution to the potential security and performance concerns that is still able to offer all the basic services of cloud storage.

Hybrid Cloud Storage, as the name may suggest is a mixture or a combination of private and public cloud storage where there is some critical data that is kept in the enterprise’s private cloud while other data is stored and accessible from a public cloud storage provider.

First of all, companies are only obliged to pay for the amount of space that they actually used, while the maintenance and the storage and buying additional space are a part of the duties of the service provider. A web service interface allows users access to a wide range of resources and applications hosted in the infrastructure of another organization.

Cloud storage can also be used for moving virtual machine images between two data centers or from one user account to another. Finally there are many offers given by the service providers for free account that five people free storage space that can be measured in hundreds of gigabytes.

Companies that provide this service are prone to change and are rarely permanent. Many of them suddenly go bankrupt, get bought by other companies or start expanding themselves and lose the focus they once had.

Also availability and reliability of this service depends on wide area network availability and on the level of precautions taken by the service provider, which often prove to be inadequate. Companies that provide storage services are a common target for hackers therefore, as a rule, no sensitive date should be stored on cloud storage.
